Bildungsurlaub wird derzeit - trotz des gesetzlichen Anspruchs in zahlreichen Bundesländern - nur selten in Anspruch genommen. Die Gründe hierfür sind zahlreich und individuell. Ob es nun Unwissenheit über die Freistellungsansprüche und deren Umsetzung ist oder die Angst vor Benachteiligung durch den Arbeitgeber.

Die aktuellen Materialien dienen dazu, das Thema Bildungsurlaub bekannter zu machen und Arbeitnehmende zu informieren und motivieren.

In den meisten Bundesländern wird ArbeitnehmerInnen die Möglichkeit geboten, sich für eine bestimmte Zeit von ihrer Berufstätigkeit freistellen zu lassen, um Gelegenheiten zur Weiterbildung wahrzunehmen. Dies wird als "Bildungsurlaub" bzw. "Bildungsfreistellung" bezeichnet.
